Isaiah 66:1

God’s answer begins by correcting every attempt to contain Him: “The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.” Heaven and earth are not rival realms outside His rule. The whole creation stands beneath His sovereignty, and even the most magnificent earthly sanctuary occupies only a tiny place within what His hands have made.

“Where is the house that ye build unto me?” does not deny that God commanded the tabernacle and temple. Solomon himself confessed at the dedication that the highest heaven could not contain the Lord. The sanctuary was a gracious place where God caused His name and presence to be known; it was never a dwelling He needed because He lacked a throne.

The question exposes false confidence in religious structures. The people had lamented the burned temple, and that grief was legitimate. Yet rebuilding a house could not by itself restore covenant fellowship. If worshipers ignored God’s word and continued in self-chosen ways, a new building would reproduce the old hypocrisy.

“Where is the place of my rest?” also recalls the promise of Zion as God’s resting place. The Lord truly chooses to dwell with His people, but His rest is not created by architecture or controlled by priests. He comes to the humble and contrite person described in the next verse.

Stephen cites this passage when confronting leaders who resisted the Holy Spirit while boasting in the temple. His use does not despise biblical worship; it rejects the notion that possession of a sacred place guarantees obedience to the God who speaks there.

The verse also directs faith toward the heavenly reality. God’s throne is not threatened when earthly sanctuaries are destroyed. Christ ministers in the true heavenly sanctuary, and believers have access through Him. No human institution can monopolize that access.

Religious buildings may be beautiful instruments of worship, teaching, and service, but they must remain instruments. A community honors God not by supposing He needs its house, but by trembling at His word and becoming a living temple through the Spirit. The Creator who cannot be contained chooses to dwell with the contrite; that voluntary nearness is greater glory than any structure can manufacture.

Isaiah 66:2

The Creator of all things declares where His approving attention rests: “to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” The contrast with verse 1 is remarkable. The God whom heaven cannot contain turns toward a humble human heart.

“Poor” here describes lowliness and conscious need, whether or not material poverty is also present. The contrite spirit has been struck down or humbled; it no longer defends itself against God. Such a person does not bargain with religious achievements but comes empty-handed.

To tremble at God’s word is not mere nervous fear or fascination with judgment. It is responsive reverence—the recognition that when God speaks, personal preference must yield. The trembler listens, believes, repents, and obeys. This is the opposite of the people in Isaiah 65 who heard the call but chose their own ways.

The verse does not praise damaged self-esteem or invite spiritual abuse. Contrition is not accepting every human accusation or believing oneself worthless. It is truthful humility before the Holy One, joined to confidence that He looks toward the repentant with mercy.

Nor does trembling exclude assurance. The same God revives the contrite and binds the brokenhearted. Holy fear and gospel comfort belong together because the One whose word exposes sin also promises pardon through the Servant.

The phrase “all those things hath mine hand made” removes every ground of boasting. Temple, altar, sacrifice, worshiper, and world all exist because of God. No gift places the Giver in debt. The only fitting posture is receptive obedience.

Communities often measure spiritual significance by buildings, numbers, learning, influence, or polished worship. God looks for a different mark. A small congregation that receives His word with humility may be nearer His heart than an impressive institution that resists correction.

The verse therefore gives both access and accountability. Anyone may become the person toward whom God looks; no social rank is required. Yet no one may substitute religious display for trembling. The high and holy God chooses fellowship with the lowly, and His nearness lifts them without teaching them pride.

Isaiah 66:3

God now describes worship so corrupted that sacred acts become morally equivalent to atrocities. Slaughtering an ox is like killing a man; sacrificing a lamb is like breaking a dog’s neck; offering grain is like presenting swine’s blood; burning incense is like blessing an idol. The problem is not that every sacrifice God had commanded was inherently evil. The problem is worship offered by people who chose their own ways and delighted in abominations.

Isaiah began with the same indictment. Multiplied sacrifices could not cover hands full of blood. When ritual is separated from repentance, the worshiper attempts to make God a participant in evil. The altar then testifies against rather than for the person.

The comparisons are carefully chosen. Murder violates human life; dogs and swine were unsuitable for Israel’s sacrificial worship; blessing an idol transfers honor from the Lord. God regards hypocritical offerings as belonging to that same sphere of defiance. Religious labels do not change their moral character.

“They have chosen their own ways” is the central explanation. God had revealed how He was to be approached and what covenant life required. The worshipers preferred ceremonies that allowed them to retain self-rule. Their soul delighted in abominations even while their hands performed sacred actions.

This verse does not authorize contempt for Old Testament sacrifice. Those offerings taught substitution, atonement, gratitude, and fellowship, and they pointed toward Christ. Once the Messiah offered Himself once for all, the animal system reached its fulfillment. The enduring principle is that acceptable worship rests upon God’s provision and a surrendered heart.

Christian forms can be corrupted in the same way. Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, Sabbath worship, giving, preaching, and music cannot sanctify injustice or cherished sin. The more biblical the form, the more serious its misuse when the life contradicts it.

God does not seek ritual perfection from people who earn His favor. He looks to the contrite who trust His grace. Their obedience will remain imperfect, but it is truthful. The distinction is not between people who worship and people who do not; it is between worship that yields to God and worship used to protect delight in one’s own way.

Isaiah 66:4

Because the people chose their own ways, God says, “I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them.” Judgment answers choice with choice. Those who refused the truth they feared losing control will receive the very terror their false worship could not prevent.

“Delusions” may carry the sense of harsh treatment, mockeries, or terrifying consequences. The broad point is judicial correspondence: God appoints an outcome fitted to their rebellion. He does not implant innocent error into receptive hearts. He gives persistent resisters over to the deception and disorder they preferred.

The reason repeats Isaiah 65:12 almost word for word: God called, but no one answered; He spoke, but they did not hear; they did evil before His eyes and chose what He did not delight in. Repetition establishes that the final chapters are organized around response to the divine word.

Hearing is therefore more than exposure. These worshipers had access to God’s speech, but their choices showed that they had not listened. Repeated refusal can reach a point where deception feels more credible than truth because the heart has been trained to love it.

“I will bring their fears upon them” exposes the failure of idolatry. People often turn from God to secure themselves against loss, death, uncertainty, or enemies. The substitute promises control but eventually delivers the fear it was designed to escape. What is not grounded in the Creator cannot guarantee life.

The verse is solemn for those who delay obedience until conditions feel safer. Every refusal shapes the capacity to hear the next call. Yet the warning itself is an act of mercy while it can still be received. God tells readers where self-chosen ways end so they may turn.

The answer is not anxious speculation about whether one has already been abandoned to delusion. A person who trembles at the word, confesses sin, and seeks God is doing the opposite of the rebels described. The Lord receives the contrite. The danger belongs to cherished resistance that calls itself worship. Truth is preserved in the heart by loving it, obeying it, and remaining teachable before God.

Isaiah 66:5

God now addresses those who “tremble at his word.” They have been hated, cast out, and excluded by their own brethren “for my name’s sake.” The deepest hostility may come not from open pagans but from religious people who claim the community while rejecting the obedient remnant.

The persecutors mockingly say, “Let the LORD be glorified,” perhaps challenging God to vindicate the faithful or claiming that exclusion itself honors Him. Religious language can disguise cruelty. People may pronounce God’s glory while casting out those who actually receive His word.

The Lord promises, “he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.” Divine appearing reverses the human verdict. Those treated as impure or disloyal will discover that the God whose word they feared recognizes them; those who used sacred authority against them will face exposure.

The verse does not imply that every person disciplined by a religious community is automatically righteous. Communities sometimes must address destructive conduct. The identifying issue here is hatred “for my name’s sake” directed against those who tremble at God’s word. The Lord judges motives and truth more accurately than either institutional approval or dissenting self-claim.

Jesus prepared His followers for similar exclusion. Some would put them out of synagogues while believing they served God. The cross itself shows religious and political authorities casting out the Holy One. Christ’s resurrection is the supreme beginning of the reversal Isaiah promises.

The faithful are told to “hear the word of the LORD,” not to define themselves chiefly by persecution. Suffering can tempt a remnant into bitterness, pride, or fixation on enemies. God’s word must remain its identity and joy.

“He shall appear” directs hope beyond winning an argument. Final vindication comes with God’s presence. Believers may seek justice and truthful reform now, but they do not need to manufacture shame for their persecutors. The Lord will reveal the heart.

This is comfort for anyone rejected because obedience to Scripture disrupted accepted religion. Human exclusion cannot remove a person whom God receives. The proper response is humble steadfastness: keep trembling at the word, refuse retaliatory hatred, and wait for the joy of the appearing that will make every verdict true.

Isaiah 66:6

A sound breaks the apparent silence: “A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD.” The repetition moves inward toward the true source. What begins as urban tumult is revealed as divine speech issuing judgment.

The temple in which hypocrites trusted becomes the place from which recompense is announced. Sacred space cannot shelter those who resist the God worshiped there. The Lord is not trapped within the institution; His voice judges it.

“He rendereth recompence to his enemies” connects with the written record and promised repayment of Isaiah 65:6. The enemies include not only foreign oppressors but religious rebels who hated the tremblers at God’s word. Proximity to the temple does not prevent a person from becoming God’s enemy.

The “noise” may include the tumult of judgment as the city falls, but the prophetic horizon reaches toward the final divine intervention. Revelation similarly hears a great voice from the temple and throne when judgment reaches completion.

God’s voice is central. The people’s crisis began because they did not hear when He spoke. Now the word they ignored becomes an unavoidable verdict. The same speech that offered mercy executes judgment when mercy is finally refused.

Yet this verse is not the chapter’s last word. Immediately afterward, Zion gives birth and comfort flows like a river. Judgment clears the way for the community formed by God’s promise. The voice that brings shame to enemies brings joy to the faithful.

Religious communities should hear the warning before applying it outward. The fact that words come from a pulpit, sanctuary, or respected institution does not prove they are the voice of the Lord. True speech agrees with His revealed word and produces humble obedience. Conversely, the divine voice may challenge the very structure that invokes His name.

For the oppressed, the verse promises that silence is temporary. God has heard religious persecution and hidden evil. He will speak. His recompense will not be a chaotic echo of human anger but the authoritative verdict from His throne. Those who tremble at His word may entrust their vindication to that voice.

Isaiah 66:7

The scene changes from the noise of judgment to an astonishing birth. Before Zion experiences labor pains, she gives birth; before travail comes, “she was delivered of a man child.” The normal order is reversed to stress the suddenness and divine origin of the event.

Zion has repeatedly been personified as a woman—forsaken, restored, married, and rejoicing. Here she becomes a mother. The “man child” belongs to an image that expands in verse 8 into the birth of a nation. It is therefore unwise to isolate this line from its context and make it only a direct prediction of one individual. The emphasis is the unexpected emergence of God’s restored people.

Nevertheless, the corporate birth is inseparable from the Messiah in the wider biblical story. The Servant’s work creates the righteous seed, and the promised people come into being through Christ. The messianic King and His community are closely joined without being confused.

“Before she travailed” means the restoration cannot be explained as the natural product of Zion’s own strength. Labor normally represents the painful process preceding birth, but God produces life before human effort could account for it. Grace surprises the community.

The verse follows judgment from the temple. The Lord removes the false order and brings forth the true one. His answer to corrupt worship is not merely demolition; it is creation. A holy people is born where desolation seemed final.

Suddenness does not mean there was no prior divine preparation. Chapters of promise, Servant ministry, intercession, and judgment lie behind the birth. What appears abrupt from the human side is the unveiling of a purpose God has carried throughout the book.

The church’s existence offers a partial fulfillment of this wonder. After Christ’s death, resurrection, and the gift of the Spirit, a people from many nations came rapidly into covenant fellowship. Yet the image also points toward the final gathering and vindication of Zion.

Communities tempted to believe renewal depends entirely on gradual human capacity may take courage. Patient labor remains necessary, but God is not limited to what present conditions predict. He can bring living faith from barrenness and form a people before observers have finished explaining why it cannot happen.

The prophet piles question upon question because the event is beyond ordinary experience: Who has heard or seen such a thing? Can the earth be brought forth in one day? Can a nation be born at once? Yet as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

Verse 7 stressed birth before labor; verse 8 mentions travail followed immediately by delivery. The pictures are not contradictory. Together they show that the outcome is both unearned and irresistible: God’s purpose appears with startling speed, and when the appointed moment of labor comes, it is not prolonged into failure.

“A nation” does not mean merely a new political state created by human diplomacy. Isaiah is speaking of the covenant people formed by God’s saving action. Zion’s children are holy, redeemed, sought out, and gathered from the nations. Their identity is theological before it is territorial.

The return from exile provided a real historical beginning, but it did not exhaust the language. The coming of Christ and the outpouring of the Spirit brought a remarkable birth as thousands entered the believing community. People once not a people became God’s people. The final gathering at Christ’s return will reveal the full community for which Zion has longed.

The verse does not promise that every revival or church initiative will become a nation “in one day.” It celebrates God’s freedom to act beyond ordinary rates and human prediction. Spiritual life remains His creation.

Zion’s travail also prevents a painless triumphalism. Even divinely given birth may involve anguish, intercession, persecution, and the costly witness of the Servant. Sudden result does not make the process emotionally trivial.

There is missionary hope in the plural “children.” The city formerly emptied by judgment becomes crowded with sons and daughters from afar. God does not restore Zion as a monument but as a living family.

When the church appears barren, this verse directs attention away from demographic confidence and toward the Lord who gives birth. Human beings proclaim, pray, baptize, nurture, and organize, but only the Spirit creates a people. What no observer has seen can occur when God’s appointed day arrives.

Zion

Zion is more than geography. It becomes a symbol of God's dwelling, His people, His judgment, and His promised restoration.

God interprets the birth image through two rhetorical questions: “Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth?” and “shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb?” The expected answer is no. The Lord does not begin the decisive work of restoration only to abandon it at the moment of completion.

The imagery answers an earlier crisis described by Hezekiah: children had come to birth, but there was no strength to deliver. Human inability can bring a process to the edge of life and fail. God is not subject to that weakness. The Creator who conceives the promise also supplies the power for its birth.

This assurance rests on God’s character, not on Zion’s smooth performance. He may discipline, purify, and delay according to wisdom, but His covenant purpose will not miscarry. What He has truly promised, He is able to complete.

The verse should not be taken as a guarantee that every project begun with religious enthusiasm has divine authorization or must succeed. The promise concerns what God Himself brings to birth. Discernment is needed to distinguish His work from human plans that merely invoke His name.

There is also no ground for complacency. Zion still travails, and the servants still hear and tremble at the word. Divine completion does not make response unnecessary; it makes faithful response hopeful.

In the gospel, the resurrection of Christ is the decisive proof that God does not abandon His saving work at the apparent point of failure. The cross looked like the death of the promise, but God brought forth new creation. The Spirit now forms Christ’s people and will bring them to the day of Jesus Christ.

This is comfort for believers discouraged by incomplete sanctification or a community’s slow renewal. God’s faithfulness is not permission to resist Him, but it is stronger than the fear that He begins grace carelessly. He does not lead the repentant to the doorway of life only to delight in closing it. Those who remain in Christ may trust the Father-Potter to finish the work His word conceived.

Isaiah 66:10

All who love Jerusalem are summoned to rejoice with her, and all who mourned for her are called to share her gladness. Restoration is communal. Those who carried Zion’s grief in prayer and faith are not left outside when God answers.

Loving Jerusalem here is not sentimental attachment to stones or uncritical approval of everything done in the city. It is love for God’s dwelling, covenant purpose, worship, justice, and gathered people. The mourners grieved precisely because the actual city contradicted that calling and lay under judgment.

Their mourning has been important. Isaiah does not praise observers who ignored the ruin and then arrived only for celebration. Those who wept over sin, exclusion, desolation, and the dishonor of God’s name are prepared to understand the joy of renewal.

The doubled command—rejoice and be glad—corresponds to the magnitude of the reversal. The city called forsaken now gives birth; the persecuted tremblers are vindicated; the Lord rejoices in His people. Joy is not optional ingratitude but the fitting response to grace.

The verse also widens the circle. “All ye that love her” may include people beyond Zion’s original inhabitants. Isaiah has repeatedly envisioned nations coming to the light and joining worship. Love for the city of God is ultimately love for the God who dwells with His redeemed people.

Christian readers must distinguish the theological Zion from every present political claim. The New Testament directs hope toward the Jerusalem above and the holy city prepared by God, while calling believers to pursue peace and justice among all peoples now. No earthly violence becomes holy merely by invoking Jerusalem.

Shared joy also challenges spiritual individualism. Salvation brings a person into a people whose sorrows and victories become one’s own. Believers mourn with persecuted and wounded members and rejoice when God restores them.

The command can be obeyed now in anticipation without denying unfinished pain. Worship rehearses the future. Every true song over repentance, reconciliation, baptism, or recovered faith is a small participation in Zion’s gladness, awaiting the day when all who loved her see the city fully established.

Isaiah 66:11

Jerusalem is portrayed as a mother whose restored children nurse and are satisfied “with the breasts of her consolations.” The image expresses abundant, intimate nourishment after long deprivation. Those who mourned for Zion now receive comfort from the very community whose desolation had caused their grief.

The KJV’s “milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory” joins nourishment and splendor. Zion’s glory is not a distant spectacle. It feeds her children because the glory is the presence, truth, worship, peace, and covenant blessing of God within her.

Maternal imagery does not make the city an independent source of grace. Chapter 60 said that the Lord is her everlasting light; chapter 66 will compare God Himself to a comforting mother. Zion nourishes because God has filled her. The community is a channel, never a replacement for Him.

The verse also resists a purely institutional view of the people of God. A healthy covenant community should nourish the vulnerable, teach the word, transmit hope, and surround new believers with care. Glory that cannot feed anyone is not Isaiah’s glory.

Like all human maternal imagery, the metaphor is analogical. It does not redefine God or the city in biological terms. It uses one of the most tender human experiences to communicate satisfaction, dependence, and delight.

The invitation “that ye may suck and be satisfied” requires receptive humility. Infants do not boast in earning milk. God’s children receive before they can give. Mature service grows from being nourished by grace, not from pretending self-sufficiency.

The church can distort this image when it demands loyalty while withholding healthy nourishment, or when it feeds people on personality, fear, and controversy rather than Scripture and Christ. Zion’s consolation should strengthen life.

The final holy city gathers the glory and honor of nations while God dwells among His people. Its abundance satisfies because nothing false or unclean remains. Until then, believers taste this promise wherever the word is faithfully taught, wounded people are comforted, worship directs attention to God, and the community’s beauty becomes practical care.

The Lord promises, “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream.” Peace is not a stagnant pool or a fragile truce. It flows abundantly, continually, and life-givingly from God into the restored city.

The Hebrew idea of peace includes wholeness, well-being, security, right relationship, and ordered prosperity. Zion’s peace is therefore moral and spiritual as well as social. Violence disappears because righteousness governs; fear ends because God is present.

The nations’ glory also flows toward Zion. As in chapter 60, their resources, gifts, and honor are gathered for the praise of the Lord. The image must not be read as imperial extraction. The nations are themselves being gathered to see God’s glory and to join worship. What they bring is purified from idolatry and directed toward the common good of the holy city.

The maternal picture continues: the children are nursed, carried upon the side, and dandled upon the knees. God’s restoration is both majestic and tender. The river of international glory does not swallow the individual child; each is held close.

In the ancient setting, children were often carried at the hip and played with upon the knees. The image communicates secure affection, not indulgence without discipline. Those who tremble at God’s word are the ones receiving comfort.

Peace “extended” by God is a gift before it is a human achievement. Yet recipients are called to live consistently with it. A church cannot pray for the river while preserving hostility, exploitation, or prejudice in its channels.

The promise finds a partial realization as the gospel gathers gifts and peoples into one body, and its final fulfillment in the river of life flowing from God’s throne. The present world knows streams that dry up or flood destructively. God’s river sustains without harming.

Those who feel spiritually displaced may hear both dimensions: the Lord brings them into a worldwide people, and He carries them personally. His kingdom is vast enough for nations and tender enough for a child on the knee.

God explains the maternal imagery directly: “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.” The comparison draws upon attentive, embodied care—the mother who gathers a distressed child, recognizes the cry, and restores a sense of safety.

Scripture most often calls God Father, but it freely uses maternal comparisons to reveal dimensions of His care. The verse does not say God is a human mother or erase the way He has named Himself. It says His comfort is at least as tender, immediate, and dependable as the best maternal comfort known to human experience.

The comparison also acknowledges that human parenthood can fail. Isaiah earlier asked whether a woman could forget her nursing child and answered that even if she did, God would not forget. Divine compassion is the standard; human care is the analogy.

“Ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem” locates the comfort within restored covenant fellowship. God does not merely soothe isolated emotions. He gathers His people, vindicates the faithful, removes enemies, and renews the city. Comfort includes changed conditions and restored belonging.

This fulfills the commission of Isaiah 40 and 61. The Messiah was sent to comfort mourners, and here God claims that work as His own. The unity is natural because the Anointed One brings the personal comfort of the Lord.

Comfort is not permission to remain spiritually childish. A child strengthened by a mother’s care can rise and live. God’s consolation restores courage, trust, and capacity for faithful service.

The verse speaks especially to grief that words alone cannot resolve. Theology is not made less true by tenderness. The sovereign whose heaven is throne bends toward the contrite and communicates care in a form the heart can receive.

Believers who have received such comfort are called to comfort others, not with empty assurance but with patient presence and the promises of God. The church becomes Jerusalem-like when wounded people are not hurried, shamed, or ignored. Yet no human ministry should claim to replace the Lord. The deepest consolation comes from His pledge: “so will I comfort you.”

When the faithful see God’s restoration, their hearts rejoice and their “bones shall flourish like an herb.” The promise reaches the inward life and the bodily frame. Bones, often used to describe strength or the deepest condition of a person, had been dried by sorrow; now they revive like green growth after rain.

The comparison with an herb emphasizes freshness and visible vitality. God’s comfort is not merely a change in legal standing, though justification is essential. Salvation restores the whole person and finally includes resurrection life.

“The hand of the LORD shall be known toward his servants” means His active favor becomes publicly recognizable. The servants who were cast out and mocked are vindicated by what God does for them. His hand is not known through their boasting but through His unmistakable care.

The same appearing reveals “his indignation toward his enemies.” Favor and judgment are again paired. God’s hand cannot establish lasting peace for servants while leaving destructive rebellion untouched. The distinction hidden in history becomes visible.

The verse does not teach that present health always measures divine favor. Faithful servants become sick, suffer disability, and die; enemies may appear physically strong. Isaiah looks toward the public and final ordering that present appearances often conceal.

“Bones shall flourish” also recalls the hope of resurrection without requiring that every use of the image be a direct prediction of one event. The final triumph over bodily decay comes when the dead hear Christ’s voice and are raised. The redeemed then experience vitality no disease can reverse.

Present renewal can be tasted through the Spirit: despair gives way to hope, moral paralysis to obedience, and exhausted service to new strength. Such experiences are genuine but provisional signs.

The verse calls servants to let future vindication free them from retaliatory self-defense. God’s hand will be known. They may pursue truth and justice, but they need not become consumed with making enemies recognize them now. Their task is to remain servants. The Lord will reveal both the life He gives and the indignation evil has earned.

Fire signifies unveiled holiness, purifying and consuming according to what it encounters. The whirlwind and chariots portray swift, overwhelming royal intervention. God does not literally depend upon vehicles for movement; the imagery presents Him as the divine warrior whose coming no army can resist.

“To render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire” shows that judgment is communicative as well as destructive. It is His rebuke—the final exposure and condemnation of rebellion. Evil is not merely removed as an unfortunate malfunction; it is declared morally wrong before the universe.

Divine anger must be distinguished from sinful human temper. God is never surprised into loss of control, never vindictive, and never motivated by wounded vanity. His anger is the holy response of love and justice to persistent sin. Because He values His creatures, He will not coexist forever with the powers that torment them.

The verse looks beyond historical invasions toward the Lord’s own coming. The New Testament describes Christ revealed from heaven in flaming fire and returning as righteous King. The One who first came humbly will appear in glory to complete salvation and judgment.

Fire imagery should not be turned into license for religious violence. The text says the Lord comes; His people do not assume His chariot. Their present calling remains witness, mercy, endurance, and the proclamation of reconciliation.

Nor should the comfort of the preceding verses be detached from this warning. The choice between servant joy and enemy shame is real. Yet the announcement of coming judgment is itself merciful before the day arrives. It invites rebels to leave the way of destruction and become contrite hearers of the word.

For the faithful, the whirlwind does not mean God has lost tenderness. His coming is the answer to their cries. The fire that ends the oppressive order clears the way for universal worship and a creation in which harm no longer exists.

“All flesh” gives the judgment universal scope. No nation, class, religious institution, or hidden community lies outside the Creator’s court. Yet universality of judgment does not mean every person receives the same verdict. The chapter distinguishes servants who worship from rebels who are slain.

Fire and sword are prophetic images of complete divine action. The sword may represent the spoken judicial word as well as death in judgment. The imagery should not be forced into a detailed chronology or used to speculate about human weapons. The central truth is that God Himself ends rebellion.

“The slain of the LORD shall be many” is a deliberately sobering conclusion. Scripture does not make final loss imaginary. Persistent refusal of the God who stretched out His hands leads to death. The verse speaks of slain people, not immortal rebels preserved forever in sin.

This judgment is compatible with God’s desire to save because grace has been genuinely offered and rejected. Love does not compel creatures into eternal fellowship against a settled will, nor does it grant rebellion eternal life. The Judge allows the chosen separation from the Source of life to reach its final result.

The language also vindicates victims. “All flesh” includes rulers and systems that appeared untouchable. No amount of power or religious cover can prevent divine review.

Believers should respond with humility rather than satisfaction. Apart from grace, they too possess no life in themselves. The number of the slain makes mission urgent and self-righteousness grotesque.

The final judgment belongs to Christ, who knows every heart and gave Himself for sinners. His sword is never misdirected, and His fire never exceeds justice. The church therefore warns without coercing, serves without taking vengeance, and entrusts the final separation to the One whose verdict is both holy and true.

The exact Hebrew of “behind one tree in the midst” is difficult, and the KJV reflects one way of understanding it. The larger scene is clear from Isaiah 65: secret garden worship, forbidden foods, and self-chosen rites. The obscurity of one detail should not distract from the moral indictment.

Eating swine’s flesh, the abomination, and the mouse identifies deliberate rejection of Israel’s covenant distinctions. The issue is not accidental contact or a person seeking forgiveness. These worshipers make impurity part of their sacred practice and call their own preparation holiness.

“Sanctify themselves” exposes the central deception. True sanctification comes from the Lord and aligns the life with His will. Self-sanctification constructs a spiritual identity that need not repent. It can be rigorous, secretive, and impressive while remaining rebellion.

“Shall be consumed together” places participants under one verdict regardless of rank. Leader and follower, hidden initiate and public worshiper, share accountability. Secret religion is not secret from God, who knows works and thoughts.

In the fuller biblical setting, Christ fulfilled the ceremonial sacrificial order, and believers from all nations are cleansed by faith. This does not make idolatry or occult ritual harmless. Nor does grace bless practices that seek spiritual power outside God’s revelation.

The verse warns against confusing intensity with truth. People may fast, cleanse, follow demanding rules, and enter select groups while moving farther from God. Holiness is recognized not by strangeness but by fidelity to His word, humble dependence, moral purity, and love.

The final chapters place two kinds of tremblers side by side. The faithful tremble at God’s word; the false worshipers create rituals that make others tremble before their spiritual claims. Only the first are received. God Himself sanctifies His servants, and His holiness cannot be obtained through an abomination.

The Hebrew sentence begins abruptly, and the KJV supplies the sense: “For I know their works and their thoughts.” Nothing in the hidden garden rites or in the heart that designed them escapes God. His judgment rests upon complete knowledge, not external appearance alone.

Yet the verse immediately turns from exposure to worldwide gathering: “it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.” Final judgment is not the collapse of God’s missionary purpose. “Works and thoughts” belong together. Human courts can assess visible actions imperfectly; God knows the intention, allegiance, and desire beneath them. This makes His judgment searching, but it also protects the misunderstood faithful. Religious persecutors may mislabel them, but the Lord sees why they tremble at His word.

“All nations and tongues” fulfills a theme running through Isaiah. The Servant is a light to the Gentiles; foreigners join themselves to the Lord; kings come to Zion’s brightness; and the final city becomes a place of universal worship. Election was always meant to reveal God, not imprison His grace within one ethnicity.

The nations “see my glory.” They are not gathered chiefly to admire Israel or a temple. God Himself is the center. His glory includes the beauty of salvation and the terror of righteous judgment, both of which reveal that He alone is holy.

This gathering cannot be reduced to forced political submission. The following verses send messengers to those who have not heard, and the nations bring brethren as an offering. The vision is missionary and worshipful.

The verse gives the church a worldwide horizon. Language and culture are not barriers to God’s purpose. Translation, proclamation, and cross-cultural fellowship anticipate the gathering He promises.

It also keeps mission under judgment. The gospel is not the export of one culture’s pride. God gathers people whose works and thoughts He knows, cleanses them, and brings them to see His glory. Every nation comes as needy as every other, and every true worshiper stands by grace.

Isaiah 66:19

God sets “a sign” among the nations and sends survivors of judgment to distant peoples who have not heard His fame or seen His glory. Tarshish, Pul, Lud, Tubal, Javan, and the far isles form a poetic map reaching toward the known world’s edges. The list’s function is breadth, not a timetable of modern national identities.

The nature of the sign is not specified. It may be the saving and judging act by which God reveals Himself, the restored people as a witness, or a particular banner of divine intervention. The restraint of the text cautions against confident speculation. What matters is that God supplies a recognizable testimony.

“Those that escape” are not survivors who quietly preserve privilege. They are sent. Deliverance creates mission. Having seen what God has done, they declare His glory among people who have not yet heard.

This reverses a narrow view of remnant identity. A remnant is preserved for witness, not for self-protective isolation. Its message concerns God’s glory, not its own superiority or survival.

The geographical names suggest regions westward, southward, northward, and across the seas. Peoples associated with trade, warfare, and distance are all within the Lord’s reach. No culture is naturally beyond the gospel.

Paul’s ambition to preach Christ where He had not been named resonates with this vision. The church’s global mission grows from Israel’s prophetic calling and centers in the Servant whose salvation reaches the ends of the earth.

The verse also joins judgment and mission in sobering order. The survivors know that God’s verdict is real. Their proclamation should therefore carry urgency, humility, and hope. They do not threaten others with a danger from which they escaped by merit; they testify to the glory and mercy of the One who preserved them.

Mission remains God’s work from beginning to end. He sets the sign, preserves messengers, sends them, and gathers the nations. Human witnesses speak truly, but only the Lord reveals His glory to the heart. The proper posture is obedient availability: those whom grace has enabled to hear become responsible to speak where His fame is not yet known.

The nations who once carried Zion’s wealth away now carry her children home. Power is converted from conquest to service. This is another reason the passage cannot be read as simple ethnic domination: the Gentiles become active partners in God’s gathering purpose.

The church participates whenever it removes barriers, supports gospel workers, receives displaced believers, teaches converts, and helps people enter worship with dignity. Yet every person remains an offering to the Lord, not property of the institution that helped carry them. Mission succeeds when people arrive at God’s mountain and belong more deeply to Him.

The verse also overturns assumptions about who may become useful to God. People from distant languages, formerly without covenant privilege, are not merely admitted to the outer edge. God consecrates them for ministry.

Inclusion does not make holiness optional. Priestly service requires cleansing, reverence, and trembling at the word. The church dishonors this promise when it welcomes diversity as display but withholds meaningful service, or when it appoints without spiritual character.

Every believer’s priestly calling remains derivative. The gathered people do not mediate salvation independently; they direct others to Christ, intercede, worship, serve, and bear witness. The glory is God’s: He gathers the nations, makes the offering clean, and chooses servants from among them.

The permanence of God’s people is compared with the permanence of the new creation: “as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, ... so shall your seed and your name remain.” The Creator guarantees both environment and community.

Earlier, a rebellious name was left for a curse while servants received another name. Here the redeemed name endures. God does not preserve the reputation of rebellion; He preserves the people remade by His grace.

“Seed” continues the covenant language of descendants, but the final chapters have gathered people from all nations and even taken some for priestly service. The enduring family is therefore both continuous with God’s promises to Israel and enlarged through the worldwide work of the Servant.

The new heavens and earth remain “before me.” Their stability is relational, not independent. Creation endures because God sustains it in His presence. The final world is not self-running eternity detached from its Maker; its joy is continual life before Him.

Isaiah 65 described the new creation through the forms of restored historical life, while this verse stresses permanence. The New Testament makes the ultimate horizon explicit: after sin’s judgment, God establishes a world in which righteousness dwells and death is no more.

The promise of an enduring “name” addresses the fear of erasure. Exile, persecution, and death can make a people seem destined to disappear. God’s memory and creative power are stronger. What He names in redemption cannot be annulled by human contempt.

This does not guarantee that every institution carrying a biblical label will remain. The chapter has warned that unfaithful worshipers may leave only a cursed name. The enduring community consists of those who tremble at the word and belong to the Lord’s saving work.

Believers may therefore hold identity with humility and confidence. Humility, because the new creation and the new name are made by God; confidence, because His work is not temporary. The church’s present weakness does not predict its final future. The same word that called worlds into being will preserve a redeemed seed before Him forever.

The Sabbath has a distinctive foundation older than sin, Israel, and the ceremonial sanctuary. God blessed and sanctified the seventh day at creation. The fourth commandment calls humanity to remember the Creator’s completed work, and Isaiah 56 had already welcomed faithful foreigners who keep the Sabbath. Its presence in the new earth is therefore fitting: the creation memorial continues when creation is restored.

This does not mean redeemed people worship God only on Sabbaths or monthly occasions. All life in the new earth is holy service. The expression identifies recurring corporate gatherings within ceaseless allegiance, just as present Sabbath worship gives focused expression to a life that belongs to God every day.

“All flesh” makes the worship universal. The nations and tongues gathered in verse 18 do not lose their humanity; they come together before the one Lord. Sabbath is not portrayed as an ethnic badge separating peoples but as a creation-centered gift shared by the redeemed world.

The verse also corrects views of eternity as timeless inactivity. There is continuity, rhythm, gathering, and joyful acknowledgment of God. The exact relation of the new moon to the tree of life’s monthly fruit may be suggestive, but the text does not require speculation. It is enough that redeemed time is no longer tyrannized by decay.

Present Sabbath keeping anticipates this future when it is centered on God rather than self-righteous distinction. It celebrates creation, redemption, rest, worship, mercy, and fellowship. Those who keep the day while neglecting justice contradict Isaiah; those who receive it as grace practice now the rhythm that will unite all flesh before the Creator.

“Their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched” describes the certainty and completeness of destruction. In the ancient world, an unburied body could be consumed by maggots or fire. If one agency did not finish its work, the other would. The worm is not said to be an immortal soul, and the fire is not said to preserve its victims alive.

“Unquenchable” fire in biblical usage is fire no one can put out before it completes its appointed work. Jerusalem’s gates could burn with fire that would not be quenched, yet the city is not still burning today. Malachi describes the final day as leaving the wicked like stubble and ultimately ashes. These passages together support final destruction, not everlasting conscious torment.

Jesus cites Isaiah’s language in His warnings about Gehenna. His purpose is to communicate the dreadful finality of sin’s end and the urgency of repentance. The warning must not be weakened into a temporary inconvenience. To perish under God’s judgment is the irreversible loss of life and inheritance.

“They shall be an abhorring unto all flesh” means rebellion is finally seen for what it is. No redeemed person will admire, envy, or desire the order that has been destroyed. The judgment vindicates God’s character and teaches the universe the true ugliness and outcome of sin.

The verse is severe because the book has offered grace so abundantly. God stretched out His hands, sent the Anointed One to bind the brokenhearted, clothed sinners with righteousness, answered prayer, gathered nations, and promised comfort. Those outside are there through persistent transgression, not lack of mercy in God.

Isaiah does not end with evil continuing forever as a rival kingdom. The dead rebels are outside the worshiping new creation, and their destruction is publicly final. The last image warns every reader to leave rebellion now. Life is found among those who tremble at God’s word, receive His Servant, and come Sabbath by Sabbath to worship the Creator whose kingdom will contain no hurt or destruction.
