Isaiah 27:1

“In that day” continues the final-judgment horizon of 26:21. The Lord turns His “sore and great and strong sword” against Leviathan, the serpents, and “the dragon that is in the sea.” Ancient peoples commonly pictured the threatening sea and monstrous serpents as forces of chaos. Isaiah employs that imagery without endorsing pagan mythology: no rival deity fights God on equal terms. The Lord alone acts, and the monster is slain.

The images may reflect historical empires. Egypt was associated with the Nile crocodile and is elsewhere called a dragon; Assyria and Babylon also behaved like twisting, engulfing powers. Attempts to assign each serpent phrase to a particular empire remain uncertain. The language is intentionally capacious enough to represent organized evil in its imperial, spiritual, and cosmic dimensions.

Later Scripture identifies the ancient serpent and dragon with Satan, so the verse properly contributes to the Bible’s larger promise that the power behind deception and oppression will be destroyed. Yet Isaiah 27:1 should not be reduced to a coded name for Satan alone. God judges the visible historical embodiments of evil as well as its ultimate instigator.

The sword’s threefold description emphasizes adequacy. Leviathan appears beyond human control, but not beyond God’s. Evil is not eternal, and the final settlement is not a negotiated coexistence between holiness and rebellion. The serpent is slain; it is not kept alive forever to perpetuate misery.

The three descriptions—“piercing serpent,” “crooked serpent,” and “dragon that is in the sea”—may be poetic parallelism rather than three separately identifiable enemies. Their accumulation portrays evil as elusive, violent, and apparently at home in the uncontrollable deep. The Lord’s sword reaches every form it takes. No twisting course evades His judgment, and no depth lies outside His authority.

Biblical monotheism rules out dualism. Scripture does not present history as a struggle between two eternal and nearly equal gods. Leviathan is a creaturely symbol, however dreadful, and the Lord’s victory is announced without uncertainty. Satan and the empires he animates act with real malice and produce real suffering, yet their existence is dependent and their time is limited.

Because the monster is “slain,” judgment moves toward finality. God’s answer to evil is neither endless management nor perpetual torment that keeps rebellion alive forever. He removes the destroyer so that the vineyard can become fruitful and creation can dwell in peace.

This opening prepares for the vineyard song that follows. Once the devouring monster is removed, God’s people flourish under His care. Salvation includes more than individual comfort. It requires the defeat of every power that threatens creation, corrupts worship, and devours the weak.

The phrases mean a fleeing or swift serpent and a twisting serpent. They may distinguish different imperial powers or pile up descriptions of one many-sided enemy; the text does not require a precise one-to-one identification.

The destruction of the sea monster gives way to a new song: “A vineyard of red wine.” Isaiah deliberately revisits the vineyard song of chapter 5. There God had done everything fitting for His vineyard, yet it produced wild grapes—bloodshed instead of judgment and cries instead of righteousness. The hedge was therefore removed.

Now the tone is transformed. The vineyard is desirable and celebrated. Whether the underlying phrase is read as “red wine” or “pleasant vineyard,” the emphasis is fruitfulness and delight. Judgment has not proved that God abandoned His covenant purpose. Purification opens toward restoration.

“Sing ye unto her” invites a community to praise what God has made possible. The vineyard cannot boast that it repaired itself. Its renewed beauty rests on the Keeper introduced in the next verse. This maintains the grace-centered order of the passage: God defeats the devourer, tends the vineyard, and brings forth fruit.

The image includes Israel, but Isaiah’s horizon is larger than national privilege. Verse 6 will say that Israel’s fruit fills the face of the world. The restored vineyard exists for blessing and witness, not self-enclosure. In the New Testament, Christ identifies Himself as the true vine and His disciples as branches whose fruit depends upon abiding in Him.

The song therefore carries both consolation and calling. Past failure need not be the last word where God restores, but restoration is not mere return to status. A vineyard is valued for fruit. The grace that guards God’s people also forms within them righteousness, faithful worship, and blessing for the world.

God speaks as the vineyard’s personal keeper: “I the LORD do keep it.” The contrast with Isaiah 5 is striking. There He removed the hedge and withheld rain because the vineyard persistently produced corrupt fruit. Here He waters it “every moment” and guards it night and day.

The repetition of keeping at the beginning and end surrounds the vineyard with divine vigilance. Human watchmen tire, overlook danger, or abandon their post. The Lord’s care is continuous. Night brings no gap in His knowledge, and the pressures of the day do not exhaust His provision.

Watering signifies more than favorable weather. In a land where vines depended upon careful cultivation, water represented life sustained by deliberate care. Spiritually, fruitfulness cannot be detached from God’s supplying presence. A branch does not secure life by admiring the vineyard; it must remain where the Keeper gives life.

“Lest any hurt it” acknowledges real threats. Restoration does not mean the absence of enemies, temptation, or discipline. It means those threats do not possess final authority over what God is preserving. His keeping is not permission for presumption, since the whole passage calls for peace with Him and removal of idolatry. It is assurance for those who remain under His care.

The verse offers quiet pastoral comfort. God’s people may see only intermittent evidence of growth and may feel exposed during long nights. The Keeper is not intermittent. His grace comes “every moment,” often through ordinary means—word, prayer, providence, fellowship, correction—and His watch continues when human perception cannot trace it.

“Fury is not in me” must be heard within the vineyard song. God is not poised in anger against the vineyard He has restored. His relation to it is protective, nourishing, and peace-giving. The statement stands beside clear biblical expressions of divine wrath: the same verse pictures Him burning hostile thorns, and the chapter begins with judgment upon Leviathan.

The briers and thorns recall the desolation of Isaiah 5. They may represent hostile powers, corrupt growth, or everything that invades the vineyard and prevents fruit. God’s challenge—“who would set” them against Him in battle—reveals their futility. Thornbushes cannot defeat consuming fire.

The imagery is severe but purposeful. Fire removes the worthless threat rather than describing endless conscious torment. God will not eternally preserve what destroys His vineyard. His holiness opposes evil precisely because His care for the vineyard is real.

Assurance still carries a warning. No one should identify with the vineyard outwardly while cultivating thorns inwardly. Grace leaves rebellion morally serious. The God whose fury is not directed against His reconciled people remains an enemy to the sin that devours them.

The distinction matters. Convicted believers may imagine that God’s settled posture toward them is uncontrolled fury, while the proud presume that His kindness means indifference. Isaiah corrects both. God delights to keep His vineyard, and He is determined to consume what finally sets itself against His saving purpose.

Before the fire falls, an alternative is offered: “let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me.” The adversary need not remain a thorn. God’s stronghold is open to the one who ceases resistance and seeks reconciliation.

The repeated “peace” gives urgency and generosity to the invitation. Peace with God is not achieved by negotiating a compromise in which holiness tolerates cherished evil. The enemy takes hold of God’s strength—receiving refuge on God’s terms rather than maintaining an independent fortress.

This anticipates the gospel pattern. Reconciliation originates with God, who provides the means and sends the appeal, yet the hearer must respond. No meritorious work purchases peace. The former enemy abandons false security and lays hold of the refuge God supplies.

The offered alternative clarifies divine judgment. God does not burn thorns because He delights in destruction. He first calls them to peace. Final destruction comes after hostility has been clung to against offered reconciliation. Mercy is genuine, and so is the moral seriousness of refusing it.

For Judah, the appeal challenged reliance on imperial “strength.” Egypt, alliances, and fortified policy appeared to offer refuge. God says that His own stronghold is the place of peace. The same decision confronts every generation. People may devote immense energy to protecting themselves from God’s claims when the safety they seek is available only in reconciliation with Him.

The pastoral invitation is direct. The troubled, guilty, or alienated person is not told to manufacture strength before coming. He is told to grasp God’s. Peace begins in surrender to the One strong enough to save.

The vineyard song reaches its purpose: “Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.” The movement begins with Jacob taking root. Roots are hidden, slow, and essential; public fruit cannot endure without inward establishment in God.

“Jacob” and “Israel” connect the promise with the covenant family in all its weakness and calling. The nation that once yielded wild grapes is not restored merely to survive. It is to become fruitful. Grace reverses barrenness without abolishing the vocation to righteousness.

The worldwide scope recalls the promise that Abraham’s seed would bless all families of the earth. Fruit may include holy character, just community, faithful witness, and the extension of saving knowledge among the nations. Isaiah’s vision does not celebrate an empire in which Israel dominates the world by the methods of the proud city. The world is filled with fruit, not coercion.

The New Testament locates this fruitfulness in union with Christ, the true vine. Jews and Gentiles who abide in Him share the life that produces fruit. This does not erase God’s historical dealings with Israel; it reveals their intended fulfillment in a worldwide people formed by the Messiah.

The order of the verse is pastorally important. Rooting, blossoming, budding, and fruit belong to one living process. Some seasons appear hidden and others visible. God’s people should not confuse rapid display with mature fruit. The Keeper waters every moment, and His purpose extends beyond private spirituality. A rooted life is meant to bless the world with what His grace produces.

The Hebrew of this verse is difficult, but its central point accords with verse 7: God contends with His people “in measure.” He sends or removes them under the force of a rough east wind, yet His action is not uncontrolled destruction.

The east wind was hot, dry, and capable of withering crops. It aptly portrays invasion, exile, and the stripping away of security. Judah could experience God’s discipline through historical forces that looked as natural and political as wind, while faith recognized that history remained under His moral government.

“In measure” does not make affliction painless. The wind is rough. Mercy is shown not by pretending sin has no consequences but by limiting judgment according to a restorative purpose. God knows what His people can neither calculate nor control—the needed severity, the proper duration, and the point at which chastening has done its work.

The verse must not be used to explain every tragedy as a precisely measurable punishment for a particular sin. Scripture itself rejects such simplistic conclusions. Here Isaiah interprets a covenant crisis about which God has spoken prophetically. The abiding principle is that God’s correction is neither capricious nor cruel.

The wording translated “in measure, when it shooteth forth, thou wilt debate with it” admits more than one grammatical explanation. It may picture God contending with Jacob by sending the people away, or measuring the force by which He removes them. The following reference to the east wind favors an experience of displacement or exile. Certainty about every clause is unnecessary for the contrast: Israel is chastened with restraint, whereas the fortified power opposed to God moves toward desolation.

This distinction matters theologically. Discipline and final punishment are not identical. God corrects a covenant people in order to purge idolatry and restore fruitfulness; He judges impenitent oppression in order to end it. The same historical event may contain both dimensions—Assyria can be permitted to discipline Judah while later answering for its arrogance and cruelty. Human agents remain morally responsible even when God overrules their actions within His larger purpose.

Measured discipline never means salvation by suffering. Exile cannot atone for guilt or purchase divine favor. Forgiveness rests in God’s gracious provision, and chastening serves repentance by exposing false trusts and training the people to receive that grace.

The rough wind also exposes false shelter. A refuge that survives only in calm weather is not a refuge. By allowing human supports to fail, God calls His people back to the everlasting Rock. His measured dealings aim to remove what destroys life while preserving the people through whom He intends to fill the world with fruit.

The purpose of measured chastening is now stated: Jacob’s iniquity is purged, and the “fruit” is the taking away of sin. The verse joins forgiveness and reformation. Atonement is not an abstract declaration that leaves cherished idolatry enthroned; cleansing becomes visible when false altars are demolished.

Care is needed with “by this.” Sacrificial payment for sin comes from God’s gracious provision, never from exile, pain, or human reform. Throughout Scripture, atonement is God’s provision, climactically fulfilled in Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice. Discipline can bring sin to recognition, lead to repentance, and remove its social structures; pardon remains an unearned gift.

The crushed altar stones and fallen groves or images represent decisive repudiation of idolatry. The stones are not merely rearranged or given new religious labels. They become like pulverized chalk. Genuine repentance refuses to preserve convenient access to the old allegiance.

This was historically relevant to Judah’s attraction to foreign powers and worship. Political trust and idolatry were intertwined: to seek life from another nation often meant accepting its sacred claims. Purging therefore required more than private regret. The public objects and practices of false worship had to go.

The verse supplies a valuable test of spiritual restoration. Grace produces fruit consistent with repentance. That fruit never purchases grace; welcomed grace bears fruit. Modern idols may not stand in groves, yet people still construct altars to control, status, appetite, and security. Cleansing becomes concrete when those rival claims are named, rejected, and denied the structures by which they regain mastery.

The branches dry, break, and become fuel gathered by women. The once-living appearance ends in complete usefulness only for fire. The image describes final desolation, not an endless process of conscious burning. What has cut itself off from life withers and is consumed.

The explanation is moral: “it is a people of no understanding.” Their ruin is not due to inadequate information alone. Isaiah’s hearers had received prophetic warning, covenant instruction, and repeated demonstrations of God’s faithfulness. Their lack of understanding is the hardened incapacity produced by refusing what they knew.

Therefore the Maker “will not have mercy” and the Former “will shew them no favour.” These words are severe precisely because God is named as Creator. The One who formed them desired their life and repeatedly called them to peace. Judgment arrives when mercy has been persistently resisted until no saving response remains.

Nothing here portrays God as reluctant to forgive a repentant person. The surrounding passage has just invited enemies to take hold of His strength and make peace. The people here are characterized by settled, fruitless refusal. The withdrawal of favor ratifies the relation they have chosen.

Understanding is therefore spiritually urgent. It includes receiving correction, recognizing creaturely dependence, and turning from idols. Intellectual sophistication can coexist with this biblical foolishness. The hopeful counterpart appears in 29:24: those who erred in spirit can come to understanding. While that call is heard, no one needs to remain among the withered branches.

Another “in that day” announcement turns from the desolate city to harvest. The Lord will beat out His crop from the channel of the river—likely the Euphrates—to the stream of Egypt. These were traditional boundary markers for the land promised to Abraham and also the directions into which Israelites had been scattered.

Threshing is an image of separation. The Lord distinguishes grain from what surrounds it, not carelessly but with the wisdom of the farmer later described in Isaiah 28. Judgment and gathering occur together: what is false is exposed, while what belongs to God is recovered.

“Ye shall be gathered one by one” gives the large geographical promise a personal tenderness. Exile disperses and depersonalizes; empires count captives as populations. God knows and gathers persons. No faithful life is hidden by distance or lost within a statistic.

The verse had a historical horizon in the recovery of Israelites from surrounding lands. It also contributes to Isaiah’s wider vision of a final gathering under God’s reign. That fulfillment is not automatic on the basis of ancestry alone. The chapter has described a people made fruitful, purged of idolatry, and reconciled to God.

The promise answers the loneliness of scattering. God’s work may be worldwide, but His attention is individual. He does not save abstract crowds while overlooking particular people. The One who beats out the harvest knows every grain and brings His own home.

The chapter closes with the sound of a “great trumpet.” Those “ready to perish” in Assyria and the outcasts in Egypt come to worship the Lord in the holy mount at Jerusalem. The two great powers represent the places of exile and false refuge that had swallowed God’s people.

The trumpet recalls Israel’s sacred assemblies and especially the Jubilee proclamation of release. Its sound is not merely military. It announces that God is reclaiming the scattered and restoring worship. The goal of return is not national comfort alone but renewed communion: they “shall worship the LORD.”

Assyria and Egypt also frame the political temptation addressed throughout Isaiah. One threatened Judah; the other was courted as savior. God gathers people out of both. No empire is too strong to keep those He calls, and no false refuge becomes their permanent home.

Jerusalem’s holy mountain provides the historical and prophetic center. Isaiah elsewhere widens Zion so that nations stream to the Lord’s instruction. The New Testament’s trumpet imagery at Christ’s coming carries this hope toward the final gathering of the elect and the resurrection of the dead.

The promise joins grace with response. Those gathered come to worship. Grace finds the perishing and outcast, brings them from distance, and restores them to allegiance.

The closing sound therefore answers the chapter’s opening monster. Leviathan scatters, devours, and terrifies; God slays the monster and sounds the trumpet of return. The final word over His people is not exile but worship, not anonymity but gathering, and not imperial mastery but the reign of the Lord.
