The fearful are told, “Be strong; do not fear; behold, your God.” Everything turns on that last declaration. Courage is not summoned by vague optimism but by the presence of God. He comes with vengeance and recompense, and he comes to save. Again “vengeance” must be heard rightly. It is not God becoming petty or cruel. It is God setting right what has been wrong, answering what has oppressed his people, and removing what stood against their life. For that reason vengeance and salvation sit side by side. For the afflicted, God’s judgment on evil is part of their rescue. The command not to fear therefore rests on a morally serious hope. Evil is not being overlooked; it is being answered. Isaiah 35:5

Then the eyes of the blind are opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped. The Lord’s coming does not remain an external event. It penetrates human limitation and restores capacities long lost or closed. The healing language is physical, but in Isaiah it also resonates with spiritual restoration. Blindness and deafness have often described the people’s inability to perceive God’s truth. Here the reversal is comprehensive. What could not receive now receives. A highway appears there, called the Way of Holiness. Here is one of the chapter’s great images. God’s salvation is more than a destination; it is also a path. The redeemed are not left to wander through trackless fear. A way is made for them. Yet the road is holy. That is decisive. Grace does not mean a careless path on which uncleanness remains unchanged. The Lord’s road home is open, but it is also morally marked by him. The unclean do more than stroll on unchanged terms. Holiness is not a barrier set against redemption; it is the character of redemption. The people God brings home are a people he consecrates to himself. The line also offers remarkable comfort: even fools, or the simple and easily lost, need not go astray there. The road is clear enough because God has made it. On the highways humans build, the weak may be lost or trampled. On God’s highway, the redeemed are guided. This makes the image both demanding and gracious. It demands because God’s way is holy. It comforts because God’s way is clear and kept for those he brings along it. Many readers know the ache of confusion, the fear of losing the path altogether. No lion or ravenous beast is there. The redeemed walk the road in safety. God does more than create the way; he removes the predators that would make the journey impossible.
