Isaiah 55:1

The chapter opens with one of Scripture’s widest invitations: everyone who thirsts is summoned to come to the waters. Those without money are told to come, buy, and eat. Wine and milk are offered without price. The generosity is almost overwhelming. God addresses need directly and makes grace sound like abundance.

The opening line frames the chapter: grace summons the thirsty while God's word accomplishes his purpose. The prophet is forming a way of seeing in which God's word becomes more real than appearances. The application is plain: holiness is not decoration for religious life; it is its life.

Thirst is the right qualification. The invitation is not to the self-satisfied but to the needy, to those who know lack. Water points to life at its most basic level. Wine and milk go beyond bare survival to nourishment and joy. God does not invite the thirsty to minimal relief but to rich provision.

The paradox of buying without money magnifies grace. What is offered has great value, yet the needy cannot purchase it. Still, they are welcomed. The Lord does not ask them first to prove worth or gather resources. He calls them as they are—in need, empty-handed, unable to pay.

The call is wonderfully public. The call is not whispered to a spiritual elite. It rings out openly. God wants the thirsty to hear that the feast is real. The chapter that follows the suffering of the servant now sounds like the banquet secured by that work. What could not be bought by the needy is given by the Lord.

The wording is a gospel invitation in the fullest sense. It honors human need without humiliating it, and it magnifies divine generosity without trivializing cost. The thirsty are not told to become less thirsty. They are told to come. That is still God’s way. He begins not with our adequacy but with our emptiness, so that grace may be received as what it truly is: free, rich, life-giving mercy.

Isaiah 55:2

The Lord asks why people spend money for what is not bread and labor for what does not satisfy. The question is loving and exposing. It unmasks the futility of misplaced desire. Human beings pour themselves into things that promise nourishment but leave the soul hungry.

The question form matters; Isaiah is pressing the conscience to answer before God. The line contributes to Isaiah's larger burden: God is holy, human refuge is fragile, and mercy calls for a changed life. The warning itself is mercy when it interrupts self-deception.

Here Isaiah remains searching because it reaches beneath behavior to desire. What are we spending ourselves on? What receives our energy, our imagination, our deepest longing? Isaiah tells us that much of human labor is tragically misdirected. We labor for what cannot satisfy. Yet the verse does not end in exposure. It turns quickly to invitation. Listen. Eat what is good. Isaiah 55:3

The invitation intensifies: incline your ear, come to the Lord, hear, and your soul shall live. Then follows the promise of an everlasting covenant, the faithful mercies shown to David. Life is linked with hearing. To come to God is to listen in trust, and that hearing becomes the path by which the soul lives.

The prophet lets the image teach the conscience before the reader can turn it into a slogan. The royal hope is not political nostalgia; Isaiah looks for a ruler whose justice reflects the character of God. Isaiah wants yieldedness, not admiration from a distance.

For us, this verse teaches that life is never found by turning away from God’s word in search of self-made spirituality. The soul lives by hearing him. And the covenant he offers is not fragile. It is lasting, steady mercy. Even where histories seem broken and visible hopes dimmed, God’s faithful love remains available. Come, hear, live—this is the gracious rhythm of the verse. God draws the needy both to provision and to covenant communion.

Isaiah 55:4

David is described as a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. The focus is not on nostalgia for a vanished monarchy but on the ongoing significance of God’s Davidic purpose. David stands as more than a private blessing for Israel. He is connected to the nations.

Behold calls the reader to stop and look closely at something morally decisive. Isaiah treats world affairs as morally accountable to the Creator. The Lord is forming people whose worship and conduct finally agree.

To call him a witness suggests testimony. David’s life and calling bear witness to God’s reign and covenant faithfulness. As leader and commander, he also represents ordered rule under God. The royal dimension is still alive in the chapter’s vision, even after exile has shattered naive assumptions about kingship.

This helps explain the promise of the previous verse. The sure mercies shown to David are not locked in the past. God intends them to move outward. The covenant promise has a public, international horizon. The peoples matter.

Isaiah 55:5

A nation unknown to Zion will be called, and a nation that did not know Zion will run to her because of the Lord her God and the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified her. The chapter’s universal horizon becomes unmistakable. God’s restored people are no longer simply survivors returned home. They become a people toward whom the nations hasten.

Behold calls the reader to stop and look closely at something morally decisive. The issue is not human smallness alone but moral uncleanness before the King. The reader is meant to come away alert before God, not comfortably untouched.

The movement is important: God glorifies Zion, and therefore nations run. The attraction does not arise from Zion’s self-advertising or political greatness. It comes from the Lord’s work upon her. When God restores and beautifies his people, others are drawn to the reality of his presence among them.

To “know” in this context is relational and covenantal. Nations that once lived outside Israel’s sphere are now brought near. This fulfills the larger Isaianic hope that God’s salvation will not end with one nation but extend to many through the revelation of his glory.

The verb “run” adds eagerness. The nations are not dragged against their will. They are drawn by the radiance of what God has done. The Holy One of Israel remains the source of that glory. Zion is attractive because God has acted.

This sentence is a strong antidote to both spiritual isolation and triumphalism. On the one hand, God’s people are not restored merely for private comfort. On the other hand, they are not the source of the glory that draws the nations. All depends on the Lord. He glorifies; therefore nations come.

For the church, the verse carries abiding resonance. When God beautifies his people with his own saving work, witness becomes magnetic. Not always immediately, not without opposition, but truly. The nations are meant to see something of God’s holiness and mercy in what he does among those he redeems. Zion’s calling is outward because God’s glory is.

Isaiah 55:7

The wicked must forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and return to the Lord, who will have compassion and abundantly pardon. Here repentance is described from the inside out. It involves both way and thought, conduct and imagination, external pattern and inner mindset.

The line brings the chapter's theology down to the level of decision and allegiance. The Lord preserves a people to display covenant mercy after judgment has done its searching work. The invitation is severe and kind at once, as Isaiah so often is.

The call is searching because it reaches beyond visible wrongdoing. Unrighteous thoughts matter. The inner life cannot be exempted. At the same time, repentance is not mere self-improvement. It is return. The goal is not moral tidying alone; it is renewed relation to the Lord.

Isaiah 55:9

Isaiah 55:11

So shall God’s word be: it will not return empty, but will accomplish what he purposes and succeed in the thing for which he sent it. This is one of Scripture’s clearest declarations of the effectiveness of divine speech. God’s word is not mere information. It is purposeful, active, and fruitful.

Isaiah 55:12

The result of God’s effective word is joy and peace. “You shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace.” Mountains and hills will break into singing, and the trees of the field will clap their hands. Isaiah 55:13

Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle. This will make a name for the Lord, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off. What sin has filled with pain and futility he can transform into something lovely and enduring. And the final purpose of that transformation is worship.
