Isaiah 53:1

The collective voice now responds: “Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” The question reveals the deep paradox at the center of the servant’s work. God’s saving power—the arm of the Lord—has been revealed, yet it is not easily recognized or believed. The problem is not lack of revelation only, but the surprising form that revelation takes.

The “report” or “message” is not unbelievable because it lacks coherence. It is unbelievable because it contradicts human expectations about power, victory, holiness, and redemption. The servant grew up before the Lord like a young plant, like a root out of dry ground. He had no outward form or majesty that naturally attracted admiration. The picture is one of quiet, unimpressive emergence. In a barren setting, life appears, but without the kind of visible grandeur that would draw worldly enthusiasm.

Out of the anguish of his soul the servant will see and be satisfied. By his knowledge the righteous one, God’s servant, will make many righteous, and he will bear their iniquities. Isaiah's line is full of gospel assurance. The servant’s agony is not futile. He looks upon its result and is satisfied.
